Plane crash in Monroe, WA / March 12, 2014

(Monroe, WA)  An experimental airplane crashed during an attempted takeoff early this evening.

According to a report on KOMOnews.com, the plane’s propeller came off during takeoff.

The 50-year-old pilot reportedly escaped uninjured.

According to the website aviationdb.com, the aircraft is registered to an owner in Duvall, WA.

Beyond90Seconds.com reported live from the scene.

Please note: In my live reporting from the scene, I speculated that this aircraft might be an “ultralight”. However—given the following definition from Wikipedia—this plane does not appear to be an ultralight.

β€œThe governing regulation in the United States is FAR 103 Ultralight Vehicles, which specifies a powered “ultralight” as a single seat vehicle of less than 5 US gallons (19 L) fuel capacity, empty weight of less than 254 pounds (115 kg), a top speed of 55 knots (102 km/h or 64 mph), and a maximum stall speed not exceeding 24 knots (45 km/h or 27.6 mph).”
