Dramatic video of apartment fire near Mill Creek, WA

Still image taken from video shows fire burning at Millwood Estates Apartments near Mill Creek, Washington on Monday morning (image courtesy Peter Nielsen).

Fire ripped through a third story apartment before spreading to nearby units at the Millwood Estate Apartments near Mill Creek on Monday morning.  No residents were injured, but The Herald (Everett) reports that a firefighter was treated at the scene for minor burns.

I set-out to shoot the fire with a DSLR camera.   Since purchasing a Canon 7D last summer, I’d wondered what it would be like to shoot a news story with it. Monday turned out to be that day. And as the video explains, it all started with a tweet.

The Canon 7D footage turned out nicely, but the far more compelling video was shot on a Flip camera. That’s because I arrived on scene moments after firefighters snuffed the blaze.  And—about 30-minutes earlier—Millwood Estates resident Peter Nielsen was already reaching for his Flip.

Mr. Nielsen was kind enough to share his footage with me.

And it’s not only what we see that makes Nielsen’s video more interesting.  It’s also due to what we hear.
