The last thing I thought I’d end-up doing early Sunday evening was shooting MORE video of fishing on the Snohomish River. You see, I already have lots of footage of the “Humpy Run” that I shot a month ago. It’s still awaiting a final edit.
When I had set-out on Sunday armed with my Canon 7D, I had intended to shoot stills of migrating birds in local farm fields. But then—as the video explains—I decided to drive down a country lane that I had never taken.
That little road soon reached a dead end. A few other cars were parked in the area, and it seemed apparent they belonged to people who’d come to fish. I couldn’t yet see the river, but after getting out of my SUV and taking a brief walk, I could hear the familiar sound of salmon “having a splash.”

The river was just below some brush. I looked for a trail that would allow me access down to the water’s edge. I passed two or three spots of beaten down plants, but ultimately chose the last trail that remained on public property.
A careful trek down the short, slippery slope put me in a fine spot, but a light rain had just begun.
I’ve only recently begun to shoot with a DSLR camera. I simply had my tripod, camera and kit lens (all purchased about 3-months ago). That’s the extent of my gear at this point.
Without proper rain gear for the camera, I took off my jacket and held it over the camera as I shot. I’m sure I looked a bit odd to the fishermen as they passed-by in their boats; for there I was, sitting on the muddy bank, holding a jacket over the camera and my head.
Well, I did tell the two guys in the boat with the two dogs (featured extensively in this video) that I was shooting video and I did not mean to appear to be so “mysterious.”
I could have used a bit more video to support the words spoken at the beginning of this story. Working with what I had, I simply chose to open with a shot I’d taken of the clouds over the river.
Despite the absence of a few more shots and the fact that a some clips featured here were not ideally focused, I felt compelled to share my experience. It was so much fun.

Really nice Mark! Loved the duck popping up! I carry a plastic garbage bag in with my gear just in case it happens to rain, not a usual problem in NM but you never know. I’ve only tried the video on my DSLR a few times and the things I was trying to shoot were jumping around so I thought I had to jump with them. Hah! Didn’t work, will have to try again. Look forward to seeing “Humpy Run.” :)
Hi, Kitty! Always nice to hear from you. Thanks for checking-out this latest video. Great idea about carrying a plastic garbage bag. I will do that now.
Hope you’re enjoying the kind of awesome Fall that only New Mexico can seem to offer. Can almost smell the Pinon burning on crisp, clear night now…
