Thanks to rapidly evolving technologies, social media and some old-fashioned determination, increasing numbers of people are witnessing what certainly appears to be a revolution-in-the-making in Egypt. The constant stream of social media coming from the protests has been largely informative and, at times, breathtaking.
While there are those who make solid arguments for some potential dangers of the blazing momentum of all of those tweets, the overall good of the collective information surely outweighs anything bad.
As for television coverage of the protests, Al Jazeera’s reporting has clearly been the network’s most shining moment. For many nights now, I’ve stayed-up later than usual watching the English language live stream of #AJE. The reporting and sensitivity to various points-of-view have been mostly excellent in spite of the inherent pressures that come while working within a potential powder keg.
US television does not offer Al Jazeera. What a shame that many Americans have had limited—or no—opportunity to witness, thus consider, history through the lens of Al Jazeera.
