It’s one of those stories immediately destined to be swallowed-up by a sea of adjectives. A familiar string of weary words that often begins with brutal, tragic and shocking. No need for them when relaying what unfolded in Albuquerque on Monday morning.
The simple facts, alone, are chilling.
Police say 37-year-old Robert Reza went to Emcore Corporation intent on killing his former girlfriend. They say he shot her and 5 other people. Next, Reza reportedly shot and killed himself as police approached.
On Monday evening, Albuquerque Police Chief Ray Schultz told reporters that Reza’s former girlfriend was still alive, but in critical condition. Two other shooting victims are dead. Four people (including Reza’s former girlfriend) are wounded.
We’ve also learned learned that Reza and his former girlfriend have two children. Twin boys. Both are reportedly safe and physically unharmed.
It’s a case Beyond90Seconds.com followed closely throughout Monday, monitoring live streams and web reports by Albuquerque media. And, especially, the tweets from some of the reporters assigned to the story.
KOB-TV’S Jeremy Jojola was one of those reporters. Already assigned to another story, Jojola managed to step-in and provide supporting coverage of the shootings. At least three other KOB reporters also covered the story.
At shortly past 7pm on Monday, I spoke with Jojola via Skype. New details from an evening news conference had yet to emerge. The interview appears here unedited. The sound is not ideal, the picture is not HD. But what is offered is the telling of one reporter’s day. Memories that will, no doubt, remain firmly held.
It was that sort of day for many in New Mexico. And that’s just a plain and simple fact.
